2010 Pinewood Derby Results     Overall By Rank

The Pinewood Derby is a major event for Pack 102.  Held each February, it gives each boy in the Pack an opportunity to design, build, and decorate  a wooden car to race in the derby.

Kits to build your Pinewood Derby racer will be  given to each Cub Scout in Pack 102 at the November Pack meeting.  You will have plenty of time to plan and build a winning racer with your son.

Winning can be defined as either very fast or very awesome ... we have prizes for both.  During the race, boys race against the others in their age group and also against the entire Pack.  Prizes are awarded for the fastest in each age group (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos) as well as overall prizes for fastest in Pack 102.

Here are a few winning tips to get you started.  Remember, this is a parent/son activity.  You should have fun working on this project together.  If the parent alone builds the racer, your son has not learned anything!

  • Weight should be as close to 5 oz. as you can get it, but not over or you will be disqualified.  The Olmsted Falls Post Office will be happy to weight your car on their very accurate electronic scales.

    Sizes:

    • Width - 2 3/4";

    • Length - 7" or less;

    • Width between wheels - 1 3/4";

    • Bottom clearance between car & track - 3/8"

  • When lubricating, use dry Graphite only,   never oil.  The viscosity of oil actually slows these light weight cars down (and will make our track messy!)

  • Add weights near the rear wheels to get close to 5 oz.
